4 Easy Steps to a Clutter-free Closet

Is a crowded closet holding you and your mornings hostage? Perhaps it’s time to take control.

In her book The Style Bible Lauren A. Rothman says your closet should be a place where you go to create yourself. “Whether your day calls for your inner power player, mentor…, or multi-tasking working parent, your closet should be the place you go to become you.”

It’s time to purge.

Let’s make the process short and sweet. How to clear your closet easily and effortlessly:

1. Edit: For each item ask yourself: “Does it make me feel pretty?”, and “Do I love it?”

If the answer is yes, then hang it back in your closet to keep. If you are not sure, then place it in a pile. If you are smashingly busy, try tackling one category at a time: shoes one day, slacks another, and so on.

2. Categorize: If you don’t love an item but can’t let go, then place it in a maybe pile. If an item is stained, ripped or doesn’t fit, it goes directly in a discard pile. No exceptions! If you don’t like it or you haven’t worn it for two seasons, put it in a discard pile. If you like the item but it needs repairs or alterations, place it in an alterations pile.

Note: At this point all your clothes are separated into three piles: maybe, discard, and alterations. The items to keep are in your closet.

3. Analyze: Look in your closet and analyze whether it is stocked with items that match your lifestyle. “Oprah bought a lot of purses for a lady-who-lunches type lifestyle, but never had time to go to lunch,” says Adam Glassman in his article Adam Glassman’s Closet Cleanout Tips. If an item is not practical for the lifestyle you actually live, get rid of it.

4. Organize: Make outfits from what is left in your closet. It may help to flip through a recent fashion magazine such as Vogue, or look on-line at your favorite brands for ideas. How can you combine your clothes to make new outfits? Are you missing a piece for a look you want to create? Try shopping in your maybe pile for the piece you need. Still can’t find it? Make a note. (This becomes your shopping list.)

Now that your closet is clear, you can easily shop for the pieces on your list, and any other lifestyle pieces you need.

Congratulations! Your closet is now a perfect place for you to “create yourself “.

P.S. Discard anything you didn’t use from your maybe pile. Please!
