Are open toe shoes appropriate for work in the summer?
Each office is different, but if you work in DC your office is likely conservative.
Local DC author and style expert, Lauren Rothman, shared her rule of thumb at a recent work style seminar I attended at Betsy Fisher: as long as one end of your shoe is closed (either the front or the back) the shoe is office appropriate.
So, an open toe slingback is not appropriate. But a closed toe slingback or an open toe pump is:
Closed back and open toe = work appropriate : Try pairing an ankle strap shoe like this with A-line dresses, pencil skirts, and culottes.
Closed back and open toe = work appropriate: What a gorgeous color to liven up a neutral look.
Open back and open toe = weekend appropriate: A lace-up sandal like this one works with everything from summer dresses, to capris- a wonderful way to dress up your casual summer looks.
Open back and open toe = weekend appropriate: Why not dial up your weekend look with one easy piece? Pair a mule with your cotton pants, crops, skirts, and maxi dresses for an instant wardrobe lift.
